Aqueous Underwriting highlights what you need to know about outdoor dining risks and the importance of ensuring your clients are protected.

Pubs, restaurants, and bars have been spilling out onto pavements and any available space since last summer to maximise the opportunities to trade – but this has all been at a cost. Many have had to invest in new or spruced up decking, new tables and chairs, parasols, sun awnings, and even marquees. And, with the UK weather as always unpredictable, many have also invested in heaters, fire-pits, and BBQs.

These investments not only need protecting from potential theft and damage but also bring with them added risks and liabilities that insurers need to be kept informed of. These include

  • Slip and trip claims from uneven and poorly lit pavements, kerbs, plant pots, planters
  • Theft and damage to outdoor furniture, marques, awnings etc.
  • Personal injury and fire from gas, oil, paraffin or electric powered heaters

All of these risks, and more, need to be fully assessed. Insurers for example need to know about the type, location and number of heaters being used and where. And the same goes for all the other investments which may need cover. We are for example increasingly advising and providing extensions for liability to cover conducting business outside of the core premises, for marque erection, and cover for theft and damage.

We all hope that we can put the pandemic behind us and none more so than those in the pubs, restaurant and bars sector who will be looking forward, with luck, to a bumper summer and autumn as they seek to recoup lost revenue. Having the right cover in place to protect their recent investments in alfresco trading will mean they can feel secure those investments at least are fully protected.

If you have any question around how your client’s risks may have changed or to ensure adequate covers is in place, please reach out to the Aqueous team and we’d be happy to help.
