Life of an Underwriter: Louise Redmond
Louise Redmond has been part of Aqueous for almost four years, bringing with her over two decades of experience in professional indemnity. Having started her career at a broker before moving into underwriting, since she started, she has never looked back. What drew her to Aqueous was not only the strength of the team but their people-first outlook to their brokers. Louise is known for her extensive technical knowledge, her calm professionalism, and the energy she brings to a fast-paced and constantly evolving market.
How did you get started in insurance, and what led you to Aqueous?
I actually fell into insurance by accident almost 29 years ago. I started with a broker, working in professional indemnity, and then after eight years, I moved to an insurer where my underwriting journey began. I’ve stayed in professional indemnity ever since. Joining Aqueous felt like a natural move. I’ve known Terry Shaw, Head of Professional Indemnity, for around 20 years, and when he approached me, the opportunity was simply too good to pass up. On top of that, the chance to work with such a talented team made it an easy decision.
What do you enjoy most about underwriting?
No two risks are ever the same! I love the variety and the challenge each new risk brings. You assess it, weigh up the details, decide whether it fits your appetite, and then move on to the next; every decision is different. That rhythm keeps you thinking strategically, sharpens your methodical approach, and ensures the work is never monotonous. The market is always evolving, with new trends, regulations, and challenges emerging, so you’re constantly learning and adapting. It’s that combination of variety and problem-solving that makes underwriting genuinely exciting for me.
And what about underwriting at Aqueous specifically?
It’s the pace and the mindset that make it stand out. Our directors move with speed and purpose, always pushing things forward, whether that’s developing new products or moving fresh ideas into the market. There’s never a sense of standing still. That forward-thinking culture creates real momentum, and you feel part of a business that’s always looking for the next opportunity rather than just maintaining the status quo. For me, that makes it an exciting place to work; you’re engaged and encouraged to grow alongside the company.
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in the market?
After Grenfell, the professional indemnity market went hard almost overnight. Capacity dried up, cover was restricted, premiums shot up, and fire safety cover, for instance, suddenly disappeared. That was incredibly tough for brokers and clients. Fast forward to the start of this year, and it’s flipped, premiums halved, capacity everywhere, covers back in. These market cycles are challenging, but they also force you to adapt and learn quickly.
Outside of work, how do you like to spend your time?
I’m a huge music fan. I’m past the nightclub stage of life, but give me a live gig or a music festival and I’m in my element. On the flip side, I also love gardening, and I’ve even got an allotment. Gardening is the new rock’n’roll when you hit 50!
